Detention

Fee charged when a container is held outside of the terminal beyond the free period.

Detention charges are levied on shippers or consignees for holding the carrier’s equipment outside the port, terminal, or depot beyond the agreed free time. Unlike demurrage, detention fees apply to the time spent with the container outside the shipping terminals.
